River Hippos
In the Masai Mara National Reserve we stayed at the Mara River Camp.
There were many Hippos in the river there. We were advised not to leave our
tent at night and indeed we could hear them all around the tent
munching on the grass throughout the night. They had someone escort us back
to our tent after dinner each night. We stayed here several nights and it
was interesting to note that three different escorts each had their weapon
of choice. One had a rifle, one a spear, and one was confident enough to
only carry a club (called a Rungu) with him.
